After a long, cold winter, everyone is ready for spring! But this time of year isn’t famous only for blossoming flowers and trees. It’s also known for its unpredictable weather. One day it’s raining and cold, the next it’s sunny and inviting. Who knows what the temperature will be from day to day as we transition from the freezing winter to the blistering summer?
Take a look at these weather words to get a better idea of what we’re talking about. Pick one and create an original GIF image that illustrates the definition of the word. Check out our examples of definition GIFshere.
GIFs are short, moving images that loop continuously, so think carefully about your visualization. Your GIF must present both the word and part of speech graphically on screen, likethis. Get creative with looping, time manipulation, stop-motion or any other interesting film device.
Choose one of these eight words: dank, stagnant, balmy, glooming, dreary, humid, placid, tropics.
Your GIF must:
Thought starter: Ever been in a moldy old basement? The wet, chilly surroundings could be described as dank, like a dungeon. Make a GIF featuring a particularly dank apartment or living situation.
Pro-tip: Writers use the word dank to describe unpleasantly cold, damp, and dreary locations. If the weather in a particular region is constantly rainy and cool, that area can be described as dank
Thought starter: Imagine a still, extremely hot summer day with absolutely no breeze. The heat on a day like this could be described as stagnant: unchanging and unmoving. Make a GIF that shows someone stuck in a stagnant environment.
Pro-tip: Writers use the word stagnant to describe oppressively unchanging environments or states. A bad situation with no signs of improvement can be called stagnant. A dirty, mossy, and unmoving body of water might be stagnant as well.
Thought starter: Imagine the first day of summer after a long, cold winter. That pleasant warmth can be described as balmy. Make a GIF shows a balmy, warm environment.
Pro-tip: Writers often use the word balmy to describe comfortable tropical locations. The sunny weather of the Caribbean could be called balmy and relaxing.
Thought starter: Ever see storm clouds rapidly approach? That dark sky could be called glooming, as it brings the promise of stormy weather and strong winds. Make a GIF featuring some glooming clouds.
Pro-tip: Writers sometimes use the word glooming to describe the onset of rough, overly serious, or ominous conditions. If someone’s face is sullen and serious, their expression could be described as glooming.
Thought starter: Imagine an entire week of cold, rainy days. The constantly gray and cool weather could be described as dreary and depressing. Make a GIF that shows some dreary weather.
Pro-tip: Writers use the word dreary to describe anything that appears dull, lifeless, or depressing. A gray, shapeless suit could be called a dreary piece of clothing. Long, cold, gray winter days might add up to a particularly dreary winter.
Thought starter: Ever experience a hot, sticky summer day? The kind of day where you sweat through your shirt without even setting foot into sun can be called humid. Make a GIF about some of the physical reactions — like sweating, panting, and exhaustion — that a humid day could bring.
Pro-tip: Writers use the word humid to describe the weather when there is a lot of moisture in the air. The hot, damp heat in the tropics is often described as humid.
Thought starter: Imagine a calm and peaceful spring day. If the weather is mild, enjoyable, and unchanging it can be described as placid. A still lake or pond without a ripple on its surface could be called placid. Make a GIF that shows a placid surface.
Pro-tip: Writers use the word placid to describe a pleasant and unchanging mood or environment. If someone is feeling calm and happy, their temperament can be described as placid.
Thought starter: Ever been anywhere near the equator? These sunny, humid, and often beautiful locales are sometimes called the tropics. Make a GIF of an area that could pass for the tropics.
Pro-tip: Writers use the word tropics when talking about a region near the equator. When we picture getting stuck on a deserted island, an image of the tropics often comes to mind.
