How Earth is like...

How is Earth a system?

Just as a living body is a system, the whole Earth is a system. Systems have different parts that work together. Earth scientists use the word sphere to refer to the different parts of Earth’s system: the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the geosphere, and the biosphere. Like body parts, the Earth’s spheres interact and affect each other. Your mission? Create a video that helps your viewers understand Earth as a system.

Your video must:

  • Include this definition of a system: a group of parts that interact
  • Explain how Earth is a system
  • Clearly and accurately describe the four spheres of Earth's system
  • Give at least one example of two or more spheres interacting and affecting each other
  • Last no longer than two minutes

The four spheres of Earth’s system:

  • Atmosphere: the mixture of gases that make up the air surrounding Earth
  • Hydrosphere: the water that makes up Earth’s ocean, lakes, rivers, and more; also includes the polar ice caps and other ice
  • Geosphere: the solid part of Earth, from its rocky surface to its iron core
  • Biosphere: all the living things on Earth

Here are some ideas to help you start:

  • Compare Earth to something else! Is Earth's system like a human body, or maybe a well-oiled machine? You could use a comparison to help your viewers understand Earth as a system.
  • Go outside to capture footage of Earth's spheres in action. For example, you might film cool footage of each sphere, or footage of spheres interacting like ocean waves crashing against a rocky cliff.
  • Interview an Earth scientist. You might ask him or her about why it's useful to think of Earth as a system, how different spheres interact, and so on.
  • Can you follow one thing (like a drop of water) or event (like a volcanic eruption) through all four of the spheres: atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere? It's all one Earth — show how it connects.

Submission requirements:

Your video must:

  • Include this definition of a system: a group of parts that interact
  • Explain how Earth is a system
  • Clearly and accurately describe the four spheres of Earth's system
  • Give at least one example of two or more spheres interacting and affecting each other
  • Last no longer than two minutes
  • Make sure your video is appropriate (no violence, profanity, or scenes that could be considered inappropriate for students in middle school).
  • Meet all official rules and requirements.

Key Dates:

  • June 8, 2015 – Contest opens
  • August 10, 2015 – Last day to submit your video (by 11:59 p.m. ET)
  • August 17, 2015 – Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. ET
  • On or around September 7, 2015 – Winners announced on the Project Ed website

Finalist and Winner Judging Criteria:

The primary measure of success in this contest will be your delivery of the poem. Videos will be evaluated based on the following criteria, weighed equally:

  • Educational merit and accuracy: Your video achieves the educational goals presented in the contest brief and viewers learn intended material from your video.
  • Creativity and engagement: Your video presents educational content in a memorable way; viewers are compelled to watch the video to completion. Does your video convey its message in an artistic, creative, and innovative way?
  • Appropriate content: Your video does not contain indecent, obscene, hateful, defamatory, or offensive material.

In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen on the basis of the entrants’ scores in the educational merit and accuracy criteria.

Prizes:

Prizes per contest vary. In most cases, a grand prize is awarded to one video in the Youth category and one in the Adult category. All entries are categorized by age of the submitter. Submitters under the age of 18 are placed into the Youth category and submitters 18 years or older are placed in the Adult category. All prizes with the exception of the Viewer's Choice award are chosen by a panel of judges. In the case of winners under the age of 18, prizes are awarded to a legal parent or guardian. Rules for each contest explain how and when we will notify you and the date the prizes will be announced. Prizes are awarded at Amplify’s discretion and are subject to the applicable district and school policies. Prizes for teachers may be awarded via DonorChoose.org.

In this contest, we offer one adult grand prize, one youth grand prize, three prizes for finalists, and one viewers choice prize. All prizes amounts are in USD where applicable.

Official Requirements:

  • The video’s creator must be 13 or over.
  • Entrants who are minors must obtain a parent’s or guardian’s consent to enter the contest.
